Two monitors should give you two different workspaces: a document beside your browser, or your editor beside a preview. Buying a hub with two HDMI sockets doesn't guarantee that result on a Mac.
The M5 Air already has the display capability. The useful purchase decision is how to connect it to the screens you own, how often you unplug, and whether you're allowed to install display software.

My starting point: connect the two monitors directly. Move to a dock when repeatedly reconnecting peripherals is the problem you want to solve. If you already have suitable cables, try them before ordering anything.

What the M5 Air actually supports
Apple lists two external displays with the built-in screen still active. Its published maximum for a pair is two 6K screens at 60Hz or two 4K screens at 144Hz. Those are the computer's limits, not a promise for every dock, cable, and monitor combination. The M5 Air has Thunderbolt 4 ports rated up to 40Gbps. Apple display specifications.
For an ordinary office setup, start with both screens at 60Hz. Once each is working independently, investigate higher refresh rates against the exact connection hardware. This keeps the initial troubleshooting manageable.
Route 1: Connect two monitors directly
Lay out two complete paths from the laptop to the screens. Don't join the displays together through an ordinary HDMI splitter.

What you need: two powered monitors, one suitable video path for each, and charging. MagSafe leaves both USB-C ports available. A monitor that supplies compatible USB-C power may also charge the laptop; check its power-delivery specification. - Connect the first screen to one Mac port. Select that input using the monitor's controls.
- Connect the second screen to the other Mac port. Check its input selection too.
- Open System Settings > Displays. Select each external screen and use Use as to choose an extended desktop rather than mirroring. Apple's display settings guide.
- Arrange the display tiles to match the physical desk. Move a window across both screens to check the result.
- Connect your keyboard, mouse, and power. Check sleep and wake before tidying the cables.
The tradeoff is simple: direct connections consume both USB-C sockets. That's fine for a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. A USB webcam, Ethernet adapter, and wired keyboard can make a dock more useful.
Route 2: Make the desk a one-cable connection
A suitable Thunderbolt dock can carry two native display paths over one host connection. Apple confirms that a supported hub or display chain can connect two screens through a single Thunderbolt port; it doesn't raise the Air's maximum display count. Apple's MacBook Air display limits.
Before buying, write down your Mac model, macOS version, both monitor models, resolution, refresh rate, and intended dock outputs. Ask the dock manufacturer to confirm that exact combination. "Supports Mac" is a weaker statement than "extends both of these screens on this Mac."
Also count the complete purchase: the dock, its host cable, and any display adapters. A dock with USB-C display outputs may still need adapters for your existing HDMI screens.
Anker Prime TB5 Docking Station: A native-dock candidate
The Anker Prime TB5 Docking Station is worth investigating when you want a native display connection plus desktop ports. Price: $399.99.
Anker documents Thunderbolt 4/5 host support, two downstream Thunderbolt ports, 2.5Gbps Ethernet, and up to 140W host charging. Its front USB-C ports don't output video. The Air won't gain Thunderbolt 5 bandwidth by connecting to it. Anker A83B5 specifications.
Check before buying: Anker's support table explicitly lists dual-display support for M4 models but doesn't name the M5 Air. Confirm your M5 Air and two-monitor combination with Anker first. This is a candidate based on the documented interface, not a hands-on compatibility result.
The dock's HDMI and DisplayPort outputs cannot operate together. For two screens, the plan needs a downstream Thunderbolt display connection as well, or two suitable downstream Thunderbolt paths. Anker specifies macOS 15 or later and its included host cable. Anker A83B5 connection guidance.
Choose it if the confirmed port map solves your daily docking routine. Skip it if you only need two screens that already work directly. If Anker can't confirm the exact setup, retain the direct route or choose a dock whose manufacturer can.
When DisplayLink earns its place
Anker Prime DL7400 Docking Station: More screens, with software
The Anker Prime DL7400 Docking Station is the alternative when an additional external screen matters more than avoiding display software. Price: $299.99.
Anker lists M1 through M5 MacBooks and macOS 13.5 or later. This A83B3 model has two HDMI outputs and one DisplayPort output, with triple-display support through DisplayLink. Its front USB-C ports don't output video. Anker DL7400 specifications.
Choose it if you need three external work screens and can install the required software. Skip it if two native displays meet your needs, your employer blocks the software, or protected streaming is central to your setup. Native direct connections avoid this extra dependency.
